About

Frugal Feeding

Welcome to FrugalFeeding, the champion of recipes which fall on the frugal side of gastronomy. If eating delicious, wholesome and sensibly sourced food on a budget appeals to you, and I rather suspect it does, further exploration is not necessary. Those with a penchant for caviar, however, need not apply.

FrugalFeeding is a concept formed out of a desire to eat through less of my not very hard earned money while studying history at the University of Bristol in 2011. However, since leaving university (successfully) my designs on frugality have been allowed to come to fruition and the original concept has been replaced by a vision which would have everyone eating cheaply and ethically.

On a personal level, I am a budding writer and hope to soon break into the field of journalism. Indeed, if you’d like to offer me any work or have any ideas for collaboration please visit my contact page and send me an e-mail – I’m an amiable kinda guy and revel in unsolicited contact.

My interests include drinking inordinate amounts of coffee (or tea), reading, music (particularly classical) and having a jolly good time with my smashing girlfriend, Katherine (who often lends a hand in frugal food preparation).

On a more serious note, please don’t use my photos without asking, as 99% of them are taken by my good self – stealing them would be a little rude. Also if you wish to re-post one of my recipes you needn’t ask, but please link back to this blog once you have.

I really like that apple drawing in your banner and I agree that potato and leek soup should be chunky!

  2. July 22, 2011 11:48 pm

So now you’ve graduated will we start seeing recipes for lobster bisque amongst the more frugal (but tasty) food?

    • July 23, 2011 4:44 pm

Well I thought that might, sort of, be the case. But I find myself hating over spending on food. It’s more a principle than a necessity – it has been for a while…

First off, thank you for your comments on my blog — and I apologize for being so slow to comment on yours. (If only we didn’t have to work… lol.) I “stretch” meals as often as I can, too — not only because of our budget, but for the fun of it and the sense of satisfaction. (Whatever results in a tasty morsel, a little ambience, and fodder for tomorrow’s food adventures, eh?) 🙂 Nice to learn you’re a viola player — I’ve met more “musical foodies” since joining the ranks. Keep up the great writing and recipes!

Found your blog quite by chance and so glad that I did. Reading your bio above, reminded me of the time my youngest son was in Uni.
From an early age he had “helped” me with the cooking/baking and by the time he got to Uni he was more than capable of looking after himself on the food front, even though some of the recipes he devised owed more to shortage of money than the art of cooking!!
Fast forward a few years – he still enjoys cooking and bakes a very delicious coffee cake.much to his wife’s delight!!
Thank you for provoking those memories, i enjoyed reading your blog, well done. Perhpas we can swap recipes some time?

    Dee

I’m glad you did too :). I really need to post a coffee cake, I do keep meaning too. I might it into a loaf as I have a very pretty new loaf tin. I’d love it if you came back from time to time :). Sure we can swap too.

Hello there from Canada! Just read your blog and really enjoyed your writing and your flair with food. I found your pastry blog quite interesting….being a farm girl we had pies in the oven all day long! I enjoy cooking with seasonal foods and try to add some zip to them….i used to do dessert catering and had a tea room in a restored Victorian era general store…as well as teach full time…and raise my son on my own….now I’m retired and read blogs like yours and cook when I feel like it…or not!

I love the idea and story behind this blog. In many ways I can relate – believe it or not I’m also in my final year of my BA. I feel my life-consuming (albeit enjoyable) blog was born out of procrastination… or procrasti-baking as I know like to call it.

    I will definitely be back!

Love your photographs! Nicely done. My blog looks so desolate in comparison. Will have to give it a shot -didn’t intend the pun-when I get a lull in my aromatherapy endeavors. I like cooking but I love aromatherapy! Did you know you can combine the two? I’ve made a fabulous Potato and Bacon soup with Black Pepper essential oil from the cookbook Aroma by Aftel and Patterson. Looking forward to making the Savory Scones. They look delicious! I am “following” you now.

Hi. I really admire your approach to life with your methods of sustenance and non waste. My wife & I live in a similar way, spending very little and cooking fresh meals every day.
I love your blog as it’s very inspirational with great editorial and high quality pictures. I think that more of us should reclaim food skills that have been left behind in recent times. I come from Ireland and here, especially in the countryside, people are very tuned in to eating, acquiring & growing their own food. Do you grow any of your ingredients?

    • October 16, 2011 3:59 pm

Thanks so much! this is a really nice thing to hear. I grow a number of my ingredients – herbs, potatoes, tomatoes, chickens, apples, runner beans. We also pick damsons, blackberries, plums and more! It’s always better this way.

  42. October 15, 2011 10:04 pm

Your site looks great… I especially love your food photos. They’re incredibly eye-catching! Any tips for a newbie food blogger?

    • October 16, 2011 3:55 pm

Thanks, I do try my hardest. I don’t really know about tips, but I would say that you have to invest a lot of time if you want a successful blog.

I was wondering if you have a good recipe to share for mushy peas? My best friend, who is like a brother to me, is from Wigan and he is always wanting some mushy peas from home. I have seen a lot of recipes but don’t really know an authentic recipe. His parents still live over there and come to visit about 4 months out of the year to Orlando, FL where we live. I am hoping to make a visit over to see them one day. I have never been and would love to!

    • November 9, 2011 10:31 pm

I’m afraid I haven’t… I’m not a big fan of peas in general and I can’t imagine anything worse than mushy peas 😀 People from that end of our country love that sort of thing mind you. Do you have chip shops where you live? If you do, get a portion from there, he’ll love it.

      • November 11, 2011 9:06 pm

I am ok with peas, but mushy ones don’t really appeal to me either! The chip shop idea is a great one! I will have to look into that! Thanks!

Hi FF, loving your blog and all it’s English wonderfullness – may be slightly envious of the cold weather you’re having – 30 degrees and 80% humidity do little to invoke Christmas cheer for me here in Brisbane, Australia. Thankfully, your recipe ‘Ena’s Gingerbread’ did. I’ve posted it and linked to you – check it out; I loved it so hopefully I’ve done it justice 😀

Merry Christmas to you and yours (and especially to Ena for sharing!),

    Alex

    • December 15, 2011 11:54 pm

Thanks so much. I’m very proud of my English wonderfulness. I love the cold weather. Yes, hot weather now would be weird. I have done, thanks! Merry Christmas to you too. she’ll be made up when she realises it’s been made in Australia.

  60. December 14, 2011 6:06 pm

My Palestinian Grandmother used to make the best Lentil Soup. She refused to give anyone the recipe though. I have yet to find one that could compare, but the search continues.
Do you have any lentil soup recipes?

    • December 15, 2011 11:47 pm

I don;t think I have something that’s specifically a lentil soup recipe, though I’ll post one soon if you like!

      • December 19, 2011 9:56 pm

That’d be great! I can tell you that she was a bit of a healthy nut, but thrifty to a fault. So my best guess is that she kept the ingredients fairly basic. Thanks again I look forward to seeing what you come up with : )
